Cloth Cat’s Top 10 Animated Cats of All Time
We have compiled a list of our very favourite animated cats! It was a tough challenge to whittle the list down to just ten! It is still however a work in progress and we’re very open to suggestions, so get in touch and let us know if we’ve missed your favourite!
10. Top Cat
One from our childhoods! The smooth talking, street smart alley cat, and foil of Constable Dibble. There was only one series (although we thought there were more!) but it’s one of our favourite Hanna Barbera cartoon time classics. The theme tune will be running around our heads all day…
9. Puss in Boots
Lover of milk and the greatest swordsman in Far Far Away, Puss was introduced way back in the Shrek sequel. Since then, he’s appeared in a trilogy of his own movies, the third being arguably the best. Luxuriously voiced by Antonio Banderas, he’s the witty thief we all wish we could be in one of our nine lives.
8. Snowball II
There have been five Snowballs in The Simpsons so far, but Snowball II is our favourite! Lisa laments her furry friend in a poem entitled Meditations on Turning Eight;
I had a cat named Snowball, she died, she died!
Mom said she was sleeping, she lied, she lied!
Why, oh why is my cat dead?
Couldn’t that Chrysler hit me instead?
7. Figaro
He’s Disney’s cutest cat and there are plenty of videos clips of him on YouTube! Pinocchio is Disney’s second feature-length film, and one of it’s darkest tales. The story involves lots of animal characters, but Figaro stands out as being a constant companion for Geppetto. He’s always at his side to give a silent comment and comfort his father, even in the belly of a whale!
6. Tom
Poor Tom – constantly the foil for Jerry! Although he doesn’t really help himself, chasing after the mouse who quickly turns the situation around and leaves Tom in a state. Slapstick animation at its finest, usually involving irons, anvils and other household objects. A particular favourite is the episode called Puppy Tale where Tom learns a lesson and, for once, their lives are at peace – sort of.
5. Jiji
Sarcastic and a little immature, Jiji is Kiki’s witch’s black cat and was voiced by a female actor for the original Japanese release, and then a male actor for the subsequent English language releases. Jiji provides plenty of comedy but also reflects Kiki’s changing nature; quite juvenile and impetuous at the start but then losing their voice as Kiki’s powers begin to wane. Very cat, and very witch’s cat.
4. Meowth
“Meeeowth! That’s right!” Sidekick to the villainous Team Rocket, Meowth appears in countless episodes of Pokémon, assisting Jessie and James in their dastardly plans to steal Pikachu. Meowth is one of the very few Pokémon who can speak human language, and he often surprises us with his heartfelt kernels of wisdom. Be sure to catch him whilst you can, because Team Rocket will inevitably be blasting off again!
3. The Cat from Flow
Perhaps the most adventurous cat on this list! Unnamed, but not without a voice, this cat goes on a journey of discovery; searching new horizons, learning to fish, and finding unusual friends in the face of a global flood. We were on the edge of our seats the whole time and it’s a testament to the standard of the animation that we believed every moment. The most true to life cat we’ve named, but one with a great depth of character.
2. Marie
Marie has to be the most adorable kitty on our list. This refined little lady wears her cute pink bows with elegance and poise, even when the going gets tough. She’s confident, proud and a credit to her mother Duchess, despite the fact that she can’t seem to keep herself out of harm’s way! She’s a dreamer, a hopeless romantic and full of mischief!
1. Bagpuss
The namesake of the company, and the saggy old Cloth Cat who comes to life when Emily has left a new object in her shop. Loved by generations, this stop motion classic only has a handful of episodes and was all made on a small farm near Canterbury. Storytelling is as old as time, and Bagpuss will always be there to tell one more before he falls back to sleep.
