Storyboarding: A Professional Toolkit

This one week course will start off by deconstructing story and the differences between boards for different media. We’ll then build up production-ready knowledge so a student will understand the array of responsibilities a storyboard artist can face and the tools we use. We’ll also look at making a concise storyboard to understand the process and inform students about the wider responsibilities in creating a complete, workable storyboard.

Students will be taking a look at the primary software the industry uses; Toon Boom Storyboard Pro. By the end of the course you should come out with a better knowledge of how to deconstruct scripts and be able to create a board that’ll put a smile on any director, or more importantly, any animator’s face!

The Course Leader

Benedict Tomczyk-Bowen has nearly quarter of a century’s experience in the animation industry, primarily as a storyboarder in TV Animation, but also with forays into the Film and Advertising spaces. Having worked with most of the major animation studios, he has contributed to shows globally and has also developed his own work for Nickelodeon. He has worked as an Assistant Director and Head of Story on three major shows in recent years and is keen to share the knowledge he has gained in training eager story crew.

Using Toon Boom Storyboard Pro since starting out with it in 2008 on Gnomeo and Juliet, he has trained staff under him to go onto successful careers in the industry. Perhaps this will be you too!

How long is the course?

The course will run for 5 days in-house from 9.30am to 4.30pm, with a break for lunch.

Where is the course hosted?

Our course is run from our Animation Studio right in the heart of Cardiff City Centre. We’re easy to find on Google Maps and 10 minutes from Cardiff Central if you’re journeying via bus or train.

If you’re driving, there are a number of car parks to choose from, you can get all day deals in some such as St. David’s and the Capitol Centre.

Who is this course for?

This is for people who wish to further develop their understanding of the programme/skill in a production environment. Where a specific software is required, having some basic knowledge of the programme or experience with another animation software may help you get the most out of the course.

What if I can’t make all of the days?

This course is taught in-person at our Cardiff-based studio. We have lots of courses planned throughout the calendar year, so don’t worry if you can’t make this one. Please keep an eye on social media for forthcoming dates.

Do you offer refunds?

We cannot offer refunds except in exceptional circumstances and this is at the discretion of the Academy.
